Hearing Aid Fitting
Why a Good Fitting Matters
A hearing aid only works well if it’s set up the right way. Two people with the same hearing loss can have very different results depending on how their devices are programmed. A proper fitting makes sure your hearing aids match your hearing, your ears, and the places where you spend your time.
At Modern Hearing Solutions, we don’t just hand you a device and send you home. Every fitting at our Northeast Ohio offices is a hands-on appointment where we test and adjust your hearing aids using real measurements, not guesswork.
What Happens During a Hearing Aid Fitting
Your fitting appointment usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes. Here’s what we do:
We program your hearing aids before you arrive. We use your hearing test results to set up your hearing aids ahead of time. This gives us a good starting point, but the real work happens in the room with you.
We check how they fit in your ears. We make sure your hearing aids feel comfortable and stay in place. If you’re wearing a device that goes inside your ear, we check for sore spots or whistling sounds. If you’re wearing one that sits behind your ear, we make sure the fit is snug but not tight. If anything feels off, we fix it right away.
We do a real-ear measurement. This is the most important step — and one that many providers skip. We place a tiny microphone inside your ear canal next to your hearing aid. This lets us measure exactly how much sound is reaching your eardrum at each pitch. It tells us whether your hearing aids are giving you the right amount of help based on your specific hearing loss, not just what the computer guessed. Studies show that fittings done with real-ear measurement lead to better results than those done without it.
We use live speech mapping. This takes real-ear measurement one step further. We play speech sounds through your hearing aids while you’re wearing them. You can see on a screen, in real time, how your hearing aids are handling those sounds. This helps us sharpen the clarity of voices and shows you exactly what your hearing aids are doing.
We adjust based on how things sound to you. The numbers matter, but so does your experience. If your own voice sounds strange, if background noise feels too loud, or if certain sounds are sharp, we make changes right there. Your feedback is just as important as our measurements.
We teach you how to use your hearing aids. Before you leave, we go over everything: how to put them in and take them out, how to charge or change the batteries, how to keep them clean, how to connect them to your phone if they have Bluetooth, and how to use any extra features. We always suggest bringing a family member to this appointment — it helps to have someone with you to remember the details.
What Makes Our Fitting Process Different
Many hearing aid sellers fit devices using only the software’s default settings. That’s basically a best guess based on your hearing test. It gets you part of the way there, but it leaves a lot of performance on the table.
At Modern Hearing Solutions, every fitting across our Ohio clinics includes real-ear measurement and live speech mapping. This is the gold standard in hearing care, and it’s the difference between hearing aids that are “fine” and hearing aids that truly change how you hear in conversation. Our licensed clinicians take the time to get this right because we know it directly affects how happy you are with your hearing aids.
We also don’t take a one-and-done approach. Your hearing and your needs can change over time. That’s why we include follow-up adjustments as part of your care, not as an extra charge, but as part of how good treatment works.
After Your Fitting: What to Expect
It’s normal for things to sound different in the first few days. You might notice that your own voice sounds unfamiliar, that everyday sounds seem louder than you expected, or that you’re hearing things you haven’t heard in years, like birds outside or the hum of a refrigerator. That’s actually a good sign. It means your brain is getting used to sounds it had been missing.
Most people need a few weeks to fully adjust. During that time, we recommend wearing your hearing aids all day, every day, not just for special events. The more you wear them, the faster your brain adapts. We’ll bring you back in two to four weeks after your fitting to check in, fine-tune your settings, and answer any questions that came up.
Brands We Fit
We carry hearing aids from top manufacturers including Oticon, Starkey, and Phonak. Both offer styles that range from completely invisible in-canal devices to behind-the-ear models with Bluetooth streaming. Your provider will suggest a brand and style based on your hearing test, your daily life, and what matters most to you. Common Questions About Hearing Aid Fittings
How long does a hearing aid fitting take?
Most fittings take about 60 to 90 minutes. This gives us enough time to program your hearing aids, run real-ear measurements, make adjustments, and teach you how to use and care for your devices.
What is real-ear measurement?
Real-ear measurement is a test that checks how much sound your hearing aid is sending into your ear canal. A small microphone is placed in your ear next to the hearing aid to measure the output at each pitch. This tells us whether the hearing aid is giving you the right amount of help — and lets us make precise adjustments if it’s not.
Will my hearing aids sound normal right away?
Not always. It’s common for sounds to feel louder or different at first, especially if you’ve had hearing loss for a while. Your brain needs time to get used to hearing sounds it had been missing. Most people adjust within a few weeks of wearing their hearing aids regularly.
Do I need to come back after my fitting?
Yes. We schedule a follow-up visit two to four weeks after your fitting to check how you’re doing, make any needed adjustments, and answer questions. After that, we continue to see you as part of your ongoing care plan.
